Meditation Foundation – Metacognition
Meditation Foundation is a mindfulness practice to develop metacognition. This consists of seven meditation sessions with ten minutes each. The foundation series will request the person first to be seated comfortably in a chair and experience deep relaxation through these techniques, which work on the individual's thought patterns.
What is Metacognition?
Metacognition is a type of self-awareness where a person has to observe and understand how one's mind works. It is to regulate one's thinking to create a reality that is destined for him/her. The types of metacognition are classified into three components. They are: Metacognitive knowledge: This is the knowledge gained from metacognition that refers to all the information individuals possess about themselves and their things. Metacognitive regulation: This refers to controlling the situation and enabling it to happen or vice versa. Metacognitive Experiences: The experience gained from metacognition involves all that is taking place and living through it.
Types of metacognition, therefore, needs a deep understanding to master the metacognitive skills step by step.
Metacognition Examples for Better Understanding The best example of metacognition learning is meditation, as it clears one's mind and makes one stay focused. This is the prime objective of learning, and hence it is becoming increasingly popular and encouraged in schools to be taught for children at an early age. Metacognitive awareness during the growing period lets a person learn well and perform great in their academics. The other metacognition examples are: To approach a learning task with an insight on what to obtain from them. Helps to use Strategies to solve a problem by thinking of various possibilities and their outcomes with metacognition types. Analyzing one's strengths and weaknesses are the core importance of metacognition. To learn all the metacognitive skills like visual, auditory, logical, mathematical, kinaesthetic, intrapersonal, and interpersonal. Metacognitive learning teaches and aids to plan in an activity or even in regular schedules. How does Meditation facilitate Metacognition? Meditation to develop metacognition is a type of mindfulness meditation. It is a mental training practice and involves breathing, letting go of negativity, and becoming aware of one's own body and mind.
How to become Metacognitive?
Metacognition can be inculcated in students in various ways. They are: By remodelling one's thought process. By practising the skill over and over again until he/she masters it. By increasing writing habits to self-analyse and stay in track. By teaching the importance of metacognition forcefully to students and making them question their actions. By assessing peer group work and having an open, healthy discussion and then reasoning out. By revising over and over again to improve the student's thinking skills.
Importance of Metacognition
The importance of metacognition mostly plays a vital role in education. Therefore if a student develops all metacognitive skills, he/she will be able to achieve all that he/she has aspired. Metacognition and learning go hand in hand as it forms the baseline for any individual to reason out and carry on with life in all the different scenarios. Metacognition process helps in building potentially disciplined learners. Metacognition and learning have positive implications on the well-being of an individual both emotionally and psychologically.
